One of the most vital necessities in survival is having enough of the right kinds of foods on hand during a time of crisis. It’s never too late to start stocking up on food items. Ready-made survival food kits (emergency food kits) can be readily purchased from a large number of retailers. This is a convenient option as everything is already prepared and the shelf-life of these products can be very long. However, the downside is that these ready-made food kits can be quite expensive.
Another option is to build a survival pantry with items from the local grocery store. If you’re on a budget, try buying a little bit extra each time you go shopping and add those extras to your emergency food pantry. This is easy to do and can be done gradually over time. The key to building a survival pantry is with non-perishable food items that are nutritional, have a long shelf-life, are easy to store and simple to prepare.
A survival food pantry should ideally consist of…
** Water (at least 1-2 gallons per person, per day)
** Powdered drink mixes (coffee, tea, Tang, Gatorade, etc)
** Canned:
* meats and fish
* fruits and vegetables
* milk and juices
** Dried/freeze-dried:
* meats
* fruits and vegetables
** Dehydrated:
* meats, poultry and seafood
** Powdered:
* milk
* eggs
* cheese
* whey
** Grains:
* cereals, crackers and cookies
* oats and oatmeal
* rice (white only)
* pasta and noodles
* white flour and cornmeal
* bread and pancake mixes
** Instant:
* mashed potatoes/potato flakes
* Ramen noodles
* grits
** Beans and legumes
** Protein drinks, protein bars and granola bars
** Nuts, seeds and nut-butters (peanut butter)
** Oils (butter, olive oil, vegetable oil, etc)
** Other:

* salt, spices and herbs
* pemmican
* condiments

* vodka (for medicinal purposes or bartering)
This list is by no means complete but makes a good reference as to where to get started.
